Asif Kapadia’s documentary on iconic singer Amy Winehouse, received rave reviews at Cannes Film Festival. “The more people see of me, the more they’ll realize that all I’m good for is making music,” the six-time Grammy-winner says to the camera. The documentary includes a mix of unseen archival footage, interviews with friends and family and unheard tracks.
However, the family and former partner Reg Traviss disagree with the critics and say that if they knew her they would not think so highly of the film. They feel it doesn’t capture her true essence and negatively portrays her relationship with her father. Traviss published a letter in the Telegraph stating; “The documentary makes out that in the two years before her death in 2011, Amy was effectively dysfunctional and in some kind of downward spiral, that she had locked herself away.” He describes it as a “fictionalized biopic centered around a distorted depiction of Amy’s life.”
Many agree that Amy Winehouse was an extremely talented artist and a huge loss to music. Her vocals and writing hit a personal chord for many. You didn’t just listen to her music, you felt it, lived it, learned from it. Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning July 2011 at the age of 27.
