San Diego was high in spirits and adrenaline on Sunday June 2, 2013 as Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon runners took over the city. The event brought in about 22,000 people from all 50 states and 30 nations according to organizers. The race began for marathoners at 6:15 a.m. and half marathoners at 6:45 a.m. near the historical Balboa Park.
The course included 45 bands from various genres such as Classic Rock, Blues, Salsa, Reggae to Dueling Pianos. Spectators enjoyed energetic sounds as they danced and cheered to encourage runners as they got closer and closer with each step to the finish line. Several runners donned the traditional Elvis costumes and tutus we love. Supporters also enjoyed and applauded for Princess Leia, a bumblebee, troops in uniform and a firefighter in full gear.
And the winners are… Simon Njoroge of Kenya won the marathon in 2:15:00 and Natalia Sergeeva of Russia won the women’s marathon in 2:35:05.
Bernard Koech of Kenya won the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon with a time of 58 minutes, 41 seconds, the fastest time ever run in America and the fastest in the world this year. Edna Kiplagat of Kenya won the women’s half-marathon in 1:08:57.
Proceeds from the race benefited the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s San Diego chapter.
